Fact: it was the only good part of Velvet Goldmine. velvet goldmine is a fucking quality film. honest. i really like it. but i probably shouldnt. little adam is meant to have a rather nifty david byrne composed soundtrack. reason enough to see that. edit- why did i neglect to read this thread earlier? i normally make a point of reading all of them here, and whoosh, this ones now two pages long. crazy.

velvet goldmine is a fucking quality film. honest. i really like it. but i probably shouldnt. Velvet Goldmine is very quality. It proves that pop exists primarily in the imagination of the recipient and therefore has legitimacy. It proves that the whole discussion of whether tatu are really lesbians is irrelevant. It proves that to the young lesbian who sees Britney kiss Madonna the only narrative that really matters is the one in her head. It proves the most authentic creation is the artificial one. It proves that there is an up side to post-modernism. It also has some pretty hot scenes. If there is a fault to the film, it is that it is overly ambitious. But, considering the amount of crap out there, is that really a fault? Hooray! marknyc xx

I saw the trailer for this earlier, and now I really want to see this film. But I also want to go and see it with a buff hottie.
Does anyone have one they can lend me? I'll return him at the end of the evening, unsullied, I promise.

Bad dialogue and too many plot holes to mention, although the most notable one is when Arthur realises who Brian Slade is by remembering him from the orgy...when Arthur wasn't even there. Grr!

Velvet Goldmine teaches us that verbal dialogue is meaningless and that there are other forms of narrative than plot. Scary! Velvet Goldmine also teaches that events do not have to make sense, or even actually happen, in order to have meaning on our lives. In fact, we could extend this to state that events and experience only happen in the mind. Ooohhh. Todd Haynes was a Semiotics major. What else did you expect? When I met Todd two years back he mentioned that Marianne Faithfull saw the film and told him that he had captured the time perfectly and in detail. Todd found Marianne's comments particularly hilarious. marknyc x

The study of signs and symbols. Basically it's a way of discussing the literal and potential meanings of images.

...damn I miss being a Media Studies geek.
Stupid gap year.
I once tried to use a lesson on semiotics to start a religeous debate (my teacher used a pentagram as a sign of "devil worship" which didnt go down well with someone vaguely-pagan like me..)
But he couldnt be arsed..
Git.

I liked Velvet Goldmine...it was a multi-coloured, multi-textured swirl of a film, we should all applaud it's ambitions, even if they're not always entirely realised...
and Todd Haynes is by far one of the most interesting directors around...."Safe", the film that preceded V/G, is one of my all time faves, and "Far From Heaven" surely needs no introduction....
Todd: You go, you.
