I swear I nearly hit a woman yesterday who was complaining about the fact that a cheese spread had been placed in between several brands of butter and margarine. "If I'd taken that home, I would have opened it up, and discovered I'd bought the wrong kind of spread," she said to poor old Adrian (it wasn't his fault, either). "And that's no good, is it?" He apologised, but she persisted: "But do you know what you're actually apologising for?" She followed this up with "I know what I'm talking about, I'm an intelligent woman, you know." I was holding a bottle of wine, and I was about a foot away from her. I wanted to hit her stupid, patronising, ugly, c*nting stupid arsing head. Fortunately, I didn't. But that's what I'm up against... I'm getting angry just thinking about this. As soon as you put on a supermarket uniform, people start treating you like The Scum Of The Earth. Bastards!  |

you should have pointed out that if she had taken home the cheese spread by mistake she's obviously not as intelligent as she thinks, because she didn't notice that she'd picked up something with completely different packaging to what she nornally does!

When I worked in Allders flogging curtains I once had to deal with an irrate man who looked like he'd just walked off the set of League of Gentlemen. He'd phoned up to ask me to reserve a specific pair of curtains, which I did. When he arrived to buy them they weren't where I'd left them - my idiot colleague had sold them to someone else. I had to stand there while this extremely ugly man shouted at me, spitting flobs of mucas at me as he spoke. Charming. On the last day of that job we had a big flood in the store and had to close it down early. I got into a glorious argument (it was my last day, I'd got another job to go to and didn't need a reference anymore) with a customer who insisted that he had to come in and browse for curtains. I threatened to sic security on him. How I laughed... |

When he arrived to buy them they weren't where I'd left them - my idiot colleague had sold them to someone else. Well you can't blame the customer for getting upset with that kind of crappy service, can you? |

My mate works in Oxfam in Ealing and he gets so much abuse which is very unfair as he's not even getting paid for it. The best job in a shop is to work in a stock room as you don't have to have any contact with the public. |

In supermarkets whats the best way to make an assistant feel good? I try smiling and being extra polite to the cashier but they never smile back, is it a lost cause?

Well you can't blame the customer for getting upset with that kind of crappy service, can you? Being annoyed I can understand. Standing two inches from my face, shouting at me at the top of his voice with disgusting dog breath and globs of spit being thrown into my eyes as he shouted I don't think there's any excuse for. |

Sometimes when people have just had too many shit customers, one person who is nice and smiles doesn't really tip the balance. Rather than being extra polite, why not try just being an ordinary, expected level of polite? That's what I preferred when I used to work in shops. |
