Oooh crumbs.
I adore and love BBR so dearly, and These Are The Things is a beauty. Their continued chart absence is baffling and wrong. To be fair, though, it's not quite as good as Being Number One... which wasn't a single.
On a Delgados tip, Mr Blue Sky will most likely not be voted for by anyone but me. Because you've probably not heard it. But if you had... five and a half minutes of pop godheadedness, the b-side of All You Need Is Hate (also rather nifty), Emma Pollock's vocals are postcard perfect, it bounces along tartrazined off its face, and everyone should hear it because it's so amazing...
But I'd be the only one to go for it. This annoyingly rules out Fallacy's Big & Bashy too, despite the fact that the bass is chunkier than a titanium-plated Yorkie. Man should be a star, can't even get on the Mercury list. Still, he's got the coolest cardigan in all of hip-hop, no question.
Also takes The Futureheads' super-amazing Carnival Kids out of the equation. Y'know how people say the Coral try to ram seventeen songs into one, when what they actually mean is, "They wear cardigans!"? Well, the Futureheads do try and ram seventeen songs into one - well, not so much songs as choruses - and on Carnival Kids it comes together wondrous-style. Hunt it down and listen for yourself. Write much more like that and I'll be sounding like an NME person...
Phantom Power's a brill album. But Golden Retriever is not one of the Furries' best singles, though it was smashing on TOTP. It grows on me quite a lot, though, especially seeing how the charts shafted it in favour of The Coral's dumdedumdedullness last week.
No, I humbly put forward...
Panjabi MC - Jogi
#25. Sickening. Mundian To Bach Ke got to #5, and was brilliant, but this is something else entirely. The interswitching him/her rapping, the jangling sitar (is it a sitar?) that runs through it, the bit where PMC himself goes "Rewind selecta...", and you just know the man's wearing sunglasses, the bass lovely, and Jay-Z can't get close to it. Astounding, lovely and amazing. Big up the lad in the parka.

golden retriver.
UNLESS-
do you realize? was released late enough to qualify. because it really is one the most beautiful thing's i've ever heard [up there with stanley clarke's 'desert song', the clashs 'straight to hell' and gram parson's '$1000 wedding']

But unfortunately they're not British. Damn these stringent rules!

sorry, i'm far too internationalist for my own good.
golden retriver it is then.
not that thats a bad thing.
i'll have british sea power's wonderful carrion as my seemingly obligatory '13th place' entry, to make it look like i gave it some thought.

You are William Bloody Swygart and I claim my fruppence ha'penny. I'm trying to guess how many words it took for you to realise... two? Anyway. If there's a united front behind Golden Retriever I might join it, though it's not even in my top ten of the year... Also - the Futureheads have another single out today, in the shape of First Day. Which is great, but the B-Side, 'Piece of Crap' is even better. "What did he say Ross?" Said "I don't like you! Says it in here!" And I said "What?!? That's just a piece of crap!" PIECE OF CRAP!

ermm, is gay bar by Electric Six not kinda poppish? Surely its video and the songs content is camp enough to earn it pop status?

Britain and Ireland only, as Electric 6 happen to be American, they're DQ'd.

I'm on a one-man Goldfrapp rampage this evening so.....
in the certain knowledge that I'm repeating myself at the risk of repeating myself, I'd like to suggest: Goldfrapp's 'Strict Machine' as the 12th choice, it's pop genius, it's wildly underrated, and on both counts is the perfect companion piece to Latytron's Seventeen, I'd say

But I don't think it was released as a single until after the shortlist had been announced. So it may be too late. *weeps for Alison*
