I firmly believe that Traci Lords is one of the finest living specimens of humanity. If I have a daughter in the future i'd name her after my heroine if I didn't think it'd get her taken away by Social Services.
Running away from home in Ohio at fourteen to become a hard-core porn star with a drug habit that would make Carrie Fisher blush probably isn't a perfect start to life but she has risen from those unseemly beginnings like a phoenix to become both brilliant and spectacularly unpopular in not one, but two careers.
Her b-movie acting is fantastic but it's her music that really astonishes. Those unfamiliar with the intelligent, driven singer, or her work with the early Manics, might have been expecting breathy mumblings cashing in on her previous notoriety, her debut,1000 Fires, is far, far better than anyone could have predicted.
Teaming up with perennial dance failures Juno Reactor, she created an album of magnificent hard-edged techno-pop ranging from the gloriously silly Euro-beat of Outlaw Lover to the genuinely traumatic Father's Field. The album's highlight is probably the wonderful seven-minute opener Control with its sinister protestations of love over a pounding synth score. It sold about twelve copies.
That was eight years ago and, as far as i'm aware, is set to be her only venture into the pop industry. She's now a DJ and acting in films like Black Mask II: City Of Masks.
Anyone else a fan?

an old friend of mine played '1000 fires' to me about three years ago and i was astounded at how good it sounded. she deserves more than her dubious reputation as 'that ex-porn star who sang on 'little baby nothing''.

I love TRaci's record too. I read that her autobiography is due out soon.

Traci is my newest icon. I've had her album for years but I only ever listened to Control, which I loved. I've been getting her old (non-porn) movies off Ebay. I recommend 'Not Of This Earth'. Control your soul! I'm getting that book right now.

1000 Fires is great indeed. It is also a really good cd to stump people with when playing those "guess who this is" games.
The autobiography is already out here in amercia. Traci fans should take note that a DVD of Cry-Baby is finally being prepared with loads of extras. According to my VERY reliable sources, it will contain a "director's cut" with extra footage.
There was apparently loads of Traci footage left out of the original release including a scene involving a Traci in a large champagne glass (I think I remember seeing this in a publicity photo) and a reportedly hilarious extended scene in the car after she is picked up hitching a ride.

Oh my god I'd forgot all about her album. Someone I worked with had it and it was one of those I kept thinking I was gonna get.
Is Control the song from Mortal Combat?
Caan't wait for the Cry Baby DVD either.

A John Waters film. He was making 'gross out' comedies way before the term even existed. I suppose his most famous films are Hairspray (the film that made Ricki Lake a star), Serial Mom and the infamous Pink Flamingos. Mind you John Waters himself is as fascinating as any of his films.

i think i have heard of it. ive seen a lot of b movies tho. Cry Baby isn't really a b movie, it's an a-list film, not a huge one but an a-list film nonetheless. Johnny Depp stars in it. Mind you it's a John Waters film and they're in a catagory of their own .

Oh I loved Cry Baby, caught it once at 2am a few years ago and watched it whenever it's been on since.
It had an absolutely enormous Ricki Lake too playing smeone who was pregnant, except of course she wasn't in reality.
Apparently they are going to make it into a musical after the success of "Hairspray".

lovebomb- johnny depp has been in some unbeliavably dodge films. I know but just because it's dodge don't make it a b-film, there are loads of crap a-list films out there. I was just saying Cry Baby isn't a b-movie.
